Contrary to the title, this book is not really about wine. Rather it’s about an extraordinary group of individuals who, for some reason, happened to come together in this place called Oregon to create something world-class. It’s about their individual and collective energy, their values, their passion, their vision, and their humanness. From the beginning, I wanted their personal stories to be the narrative, told in their own words. So I set out with recorder and camera. Originally I thought talking with twenty key people would do the trick. Wrong. In the end, I recorded nearly two hundred hours of interviews with more than eighty owners, winemakers, and vineyard managers from all over the state, and spoke with many more wine-industry workers—in several languages. Then, true to a National Geographic background, I took more than three thousand photographs, which I agonizingly edited down to one thousand “finals.” During the very first interview, when I heard Oregon wine pioneer Dick Ponzi say, “I’ve never really told this to anyone before,” I knew we were on the right track. 128 pages
